Cedar Meadow Farm Newsletter

October/November 2006

Greetings from Cedar Meadow Farm!

It is hard to believe Fall is already upon us.  We’ve had a successful summer and are looking forward to the cooler weather.  The broilers have grown well this year and though most have been pre-sold, we anticipate there should be small numbers of birds available through the end of November.  Please send us an e-mail if you are interested in trying out a flavorful new variety of bird.

Thanskgiving is just around the corner and we have long since been sold out of our Turkeys.  Not to worry though, we are planning on increasing our stocks next summer so we can be sure to supply even more customers with these heritage beauties.  You’ll note that they are smaller than their commercial cousins but we are truly looking forward to a great meal on Thanksgiving Day!

As many of you already have read, Cedar Meadow Farm chicken is now featured on the menu at the Still River Café in Eastford, CT.  Please take a moment to visit their website at www.stillrivercafe.com.  As our production levels increase, we are eager to continue to expand our market to more restaurants and ultimately, to a local food co-op.  Most of all, we want to make sure that everyone who has visited us at the farm is able to get the wonderful products we have to offer.

Pigs have been growing well, they are especially happy now that the oak and hickory trees are dropping their nuts. They are quite fond of them and it is fun to watch them truffle through the trees to find them!  Our Labor Day pigs were very well received by our guests and our customers – without a doubt, we will be growing out a few more next year for this purpose.  We have a few more going to the butcher in December but note that they have already been pre-sold.

Our layer hens are in the middle of their molt.  Egg production is down but we are being supplemented by our spring pullets that have just begun to lay.  We have purchased our fall pullets and will not be placing another order until March or April of next year.  We will be ordering another assortment of birds – Aracunas, Dominiques, Rose Comb Red Leghorns, and New Hampshire Reds.  We can customize our order to include any special breed you might be interested in.  They will be ready for your henhouse just as the weather warms up in late May.  Please give us a call or send us an e-mail now if you think you might want to expand your flock or start a new one.

Given how strong demand for our products has been, we’re looking to the future and will be expanding the product line to include ducks, pheasant, and rabbit.  Rabbit production should begin this winter and expect to see ducks and pheasant on our order forms as early as June of next year!

Wishing you all health and happiness,

Brian and Julia Cronin
