Cedar Meadow Farm Newsletter

January/February 2007

Greetings from Cedar Meadow Farm!

It has been a great first year for us.  We are pleased with the progress we made last year and are looking forward to continuing to improve our product line-up and customer service.  Based on feedback from you, our customer, we are changing our product line-up and services to help meet your needs.

First and foremost, we are expanding the layer flock dramatically.  We are sorry that we have not been able to give all our customers an opportunity to enjoy our eggs and hope that by July of 2007, we will have enough eggs for everyone!  In addition, we will be offering more "hen-house ready" poults for sale this spring.  We have already ordered our White Leghorns, New Hampshire Reds, Blue Andalusians, Welsummers, Dominiques, Cuckoo Marans, and Aracunas from the hatchery.  They will be ready for you by mid-May.  If you are interested in any of these birds, let us know now as we sell out very quickly.  In addition, if you have a special variety you are interested in getting, we may still be able to customize our order to include your bird for you.

Our turkeys sold out faster than we could have imagined.  We will be narrowing our Heritage Breeds down to three:  the Wishard Bronze, The Naragansett, and the Bourbon Red.  In addition, we will have a small number of Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys this November.  Due to their more efficient feed conversion and faster grow out times, we can offer this bird for a slightly lower price.

Speaking of prices, we will be updating our price list effective March 1st 2007.  This is due to many factors, including our labor and overhead costs, but most of the increase is due to the rapid rise in the cost of grain.  Though we could get a low quality grain at a lower price, we do not believe this does justice to either or animals or our customers.  We are actively seeking out sources of non-GMO feeds.  In the meantime, you can be rest assured that our animals do not recieve any medicated feed (unless there is a medical reason to justify this) and are fed vegetarian feeds containing no animal by-products.

Our product line-up will be expanding to include both ducks and rabbits.  We anticipate having our first "crop" of rabbits available in late June/early July and ducks will be ready shortly thereafter.  We are very excited to have both of these products available to our customers.  We have enjoyed them for our own personal use for some time now and know you will enjoy them too.

We realize not everyone has room for a 1/4, 1/2, or whole pig in their freezer.  As such, we will be including a "Pork Sampler" as one of our products.  You can expect to find popular items such as ham steaks, bacon, pork chops, and sausage in this sampler.  We are still researching the cost of this package but we promise to bring you the highest quality and best value we can.

And now, for our most exciting news, Cedar Meadow Farm is striving to become the second farm in the State of Connecticut to be Certified Humane.  Our friends Craig and Cheryl Floyd at Footsteps Farm in Stonington have been the first to do so.  We are following closly in their footsteps and are excited to have the Certified Humane Inspectors visit our farm this spring.  This is just one more way to show our committment to our animals and our customers that you can have a quality product with a clear concience.

Wishing you all health and happiness,

Brian and Julia Cronin
