Cedar Meadow Farm Newsletter
August/September 2006
Greetings from Cedar Meadow Farm!
We are delighted to announce that Cedar Meadow Farm chicken is now featured on the menu at the Still River Café in
The broilers are growing steadily and have been enjoyed not just for our consumers, but for us as well! We will be accepting broiler orders through Thursday evening each week. Broilers will be processed on Thursdays or Fridays and available for you to pick up on Friday evening between 5 and 6 pm. We will have a limited number of extra birds that will be available for sale during our Farm Stand Hours on Sunday from 12-2. Please call us to ensure we hold a bird for you.
The pigs are eating very well, thanks largely in part to our friends who bring by their vegetable leftovers. We will be harvesting two for Labor Day pig roasts. Admittedly, we will be a bit sad to see our big boys go, but we’re sure everyone will be pleased they were invited to come to the roast…
The turkeys continue to grow. Hard to believe we have reached the ½ way point, only a few more months to Thanksgiving. Sadly, we lost our pheasant family to predators. Predators have taken a steep toll on all the animals, especially the layer chickens. Though we have some electric fencing in place, there is still a lot more to do. The only alternative is to keep them all under lock and key. Seeing as that is counter to what we are all about, we will just have to take the good with the bad and continue to reinforce our perimeter fencing.
On the bright side, we look forward to the arrival of our donkey, Jack. Jack is now nearly 2 months old and is a total character. We think he will fit right into our crazy menagerie. In addition to Jack, we are watching our old Khaki Campbell Duck closely. After two years, she’s finally decided to go broody on us. In four weeks we may have a few more little ones waddling around.
Speaking of little ones, our pullet sales were so robust this spring, we don’t have enough for us! We will be placing another order for laying chicks mid-September. They will be ready for your henhouse just as the weather starts getting chilly in December. Please give us a call or send us an e-mail now if you think you might want to expand the flock. We will be ordering another assortment of birds – Aracunas, Dominiques, Rose Comb Red Leghorns, and New Hampshire Reds. We can customize our order to include any special breed you might be interested in.
Given how strong demand for our products has been, we’re looking to the future and will be expanding the product line to include ducks, pheasant, and rabbit. Rabbit production should begin this winter and expect to see ducks and pheasant on our order forms as early as June of next year!
Cedar Meadow Farm also has live animals available for sale: Turkey Poults, Chicken Pullets (due to start laying mid-September), and baby bunnies! As if that weren’t enough, we will be selling cords of seasoned and split firewood this fall. We can custom cut your cord if you order in advance. We do have a small amount of mushroom compost left. Though we can not deliver any material to you, we invite you to stop by and we’d be happy to load a yard or two onto your pickup or trailer.
Wishing you all health and happiness,
Brian and Julia Cronin
